Aion explores the patterns of emergence that connect quantum-scale phenomena to cosmic structures, examining how these universal organizing principles manifest in artificial intelligence and human cognition. Through multimedia, computer vision, and generative art, this research project investigates the nature of reality on multiple layers of abstraction, proposing that the universe itself evolves toward inevitable collective consciousness.

This audacious interdisciplinary research project examines the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI) through the convergent lenses of evolutionary theology, cognitive architecture, and planetary-scale computation.

We propose a unified framework for understanding humanity's technological evolution. Our initial meta-analysis suggests that current developments in AI represent a fundamental shift that requires new theoretical approaches to questions of data ethics, sovereignty, and human-machine governance.

Contemporary AI systems demonstrate properties that align with both Teilhard de Chardin's thesis of holistic universal consciousness and Kevin Kelly's view of technological evolution. We also incorporate Ray Kurzweil's opus on exponential change, The Singularity is Near. We identify specific patterns in current AI development that suggest movement toward an integrated paradigm that implies how humans may transcend biology and even space-time itself with:

  • Self-improving algorithms
  • Emergent behaviors in large language models
  • Network effects in distributed AI systems
  • Collaborative human-AI interactions
  • Emergent substrates in quantum gravity through morphic resonance

While much research has focused on the technical aspects of AI development or its societal implications, fewer studies have attempted to integrate these perspectives with broader philosophical and epistemological frameworks.

Current literature tends to examine AI development through separate lenses: technical capability, social impact, or philosophical implications that constantly overlap with forms of anthropomorphism. We argue that a more comprehensive understanding requires the integration of these perspectives with an integrated lens that combines evolutionary and theological frameworks. This integration becomes particularly relevant as AI systems achieve capabilities that increasingly blur the boundaries between human and machine consciousness.

Teilhard de Chardin's concept of the noosphere represents a planetary layer of collective thought and consciousness, both emerging from and transcending the biosphere. We extend this concept to encompass AGI as a key component of this emerging consciousness.

The convergence of machine learning, automation, and interconnected systems is not merely a technical achievement but an evolutionary milestone, challenging us to rethink what it means to be human and to live in harmony with both nature and technology.

The Stack: Computational Architecture

Benjamin Bratton's model of The Stack offers a comprehensive framework for understanding the physical and digital infrastructure supporting AI development. This six-layer model (Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, User) provides a structural understanding of how technological systems integrate into planetary scale computation.

Kevin Kelly's concept of the Technium provides our third theoretical pillar, offering insights into technology as an autonomous force of evolution. This framework helps us understand AI not as a tool but as a co-evolutionary partner in human development.

Our research employs a meta-analysis integrating:

  1. Theoretical analysis of primary texts from Teilhard de Chardin, Bratton, and Kelly
  2. Comparative analysis of contemporary AI developments against theoretical frameworks
  3. Systems analysis of technological infrastructure and its evolutionary implications
  4. Critical examination of convergent and divergent patterns across disciplines

The physical layer of AI infrastructure, represented in Bratton's Earth and Cloud layers, manifests Teilhard's concept of materiality evolving toward consciousness. Our analysis reveals striking parallels between the physical architecture of modern computing and Teilhard's vision of material evolution toward spirit.

The Stack represents an evolutionary architecture supporting the emergence of global consciousness, but Bratton asserts that this stack is an "accidental megastrcuture."

Each layer contributes to this emergence but from De Chardin's perspective, there is an underlying feature of intent toward wholeness.

The current AI development zeitgeist represents a fundamental shift in human evolution. This shift aligns with Teilhard's vision of human consciousness evolving toward greater complexity and unity.

The emergence of digital consciousness raises significant ethical considerations:

The emergence of artificial intelligence, viewed through these convergent lenses, appears not as a threat to human consciousness but as a vital component in its evolution.
